Web 2.0 Blueprint

Web 2.0 is a concept originated in 2004, which refers to a new standard in the design

, programming, scope and nature of web pages. The 2.0 stands for a completely new approach to the Web, as opposed to the old Web (which was later named Web 1.0).

Web pages developed in the old Web 1.0 fashion were mainly static pages, designed to display data, without any real interaction with the users. The highest level of interaction was obtained by integrating Javascript specific applets and pop-up windows, which would modify their behavior according to specific parameters. This was acceptable, until the Internet became a prime place to do business.

In order to sell products, you need clients. Internet Marketers always say that a strong client base is the first and most important step you need to undertake in order to be successful. While old style web sites did a very good job at displaying information about products and services, and clients could communicate with buyers through emails, it was not enough. A certain level of comfort and efficiency needed to be reached, in order for the Internet to become a true marketplace.

Internet marketing studies showed that web surfers were attracted to web pages centered around them and which interacted with them in a way that captured their attention. The problem was that old style web pages did not manage to set the focus on the users.

In this case, a new system needed to be developed, so that users would be more interested in spending time on the web, not just for reading, looking at pictures, or emailing, but also for shopping or interacting and exchanging ideas with friends.

From an internet marketers point of view, each client may have a group of friends, which each in turn may have individual groups of friends, and so on, forming pockets of communities interconnected with each other, similar to a spider web, in which each line is a type of relation, and each node is a community or groups of communities.

Web sites needed to be developed with all of this in mind. The 2.0 standard was created in order to impose a more user orientated style of writing web pages.

Users could browse and share information with friends through dedicated services, or with services integrated within the web sites they are browsing. This is vital for internet marketers since it provides a way for their products to be known to a large group of potential customers.

The first step towards 2.0 was taken early in the days of 1.0, through the use of web forums and broadcasting systems, which would allow communities to communicate easier. The only problem was that users had to wait for a set of responses to be posted, and this could take a long time.

An innovation brought by web 2.0 is the ability to refresh content on a web page without refreshing the whole web page (through a technology called AJAX), which opened the way for real-time communication between users. This practically eliminated the problem of web forums, by introducing live web chats, live synchronizations between web pages and a general ease in communication.

Web 2.0 replaced the old static content web pages with dynamic, user orientated web pages, which focus on users creating connections with other users, and sharing photographs, thoughts and ideas, through blogs, socializing networks and more. It basically brought the user into attention, which is exactly what the internet marketing industry is based on.
