Web Design Rules

1. Stay away from splash pages.

1. Stay away from splash pages.

Splash pages are pages that are like a cover to your site. You've seen them. You visit a site and instead of going to a main page, you encounter a splash page that tells you to "enter here". Don't give away the chance to show your main page by using splash pages. Let people know exactly what your blog or site as soon as they visit your main page.

2. Stay away from having an excessive amount of ad banners.

Banners these days just aren't that effective when on websites. People have become wise to clicking on banner ads. They are more likely to click on a link in a post you write where you may make reference to something you are promoting or trying to sell. Banner ads just don't have high click-thru rates and you are likely wasting time having them.

3. Basic Basic Basic.

Ever been to Apple's website. Or even Facebook. These very popular sites have easy navigation and they are pleasing to the eye. Having fancy colors and all kinds of pictures and graphics, are confusing to your potential readers and can cause them to leave your site in a hurry. Keep your blog simple and easy to navigate and readers will stick around longer. So stay away from menus based on Flash.

4. Make sure your readers know where they are on your site.

You don't want to confuse your readers when they are browsing through your site. If they get confused, guess what? They will leave and a potential customer is lost for good. So be sure your visitors know exactly where they are as they browse through different sections of your website.

5. Avoid sound or audio.

You want your readers to navigate your site without annoying music in their ear. If you insist on having music then be sure that your visitors have control over whether it plays or not, and try not to have it on autoplay. Even if you are in a music niche, give your readers the option of whether or not they want to hear music.
