Web Design - Things To Consider In Your Design
Web design is becoming easier and easier to do
. With a little basic knowledge of web design programs, many people can put together a simple site reasonably quickly. With the innovation of content management systems and blogging software such as Wordpress, pretty much anyone can put together a complex and fantastic looking web site in hours. But what constitutes good design, and what things should you consider in your design?
First, it's important to note that the physical appearance of a web site is only part of the design process. Of course, it's important that the site looks nice, professional and easy on the eye, but there are many other factors to consider such as how it performs, how easy it is to navigate, the content and the famous SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that will help to get traffic to your website.
But the first consideration is of course the looks of the site. If you can think of the acronym, CRAP, (or PARC if you prefer). This stands for Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity. All four elements applied properly together should give a good looking site.
Contrast is needed to draw the visitor to the site initially. Contrast between two elements, perhaps a large font to a small font, something that catches the eye. Repetition forms the theme of the site, it provides visual unity for the visitor and allows them to understand the hierarchy of how the information is presented. Good alignment should present the viewer with properly aligned text, images, media and other element. Proximity allows the designer to group like information together.
The second consideration deals with the functionality of the site. This is how quickly it takes the pages to load, the speed in which items are picked out from a database if the site is dynamic. It can be likened to that of a car engine for example.
Thirdly, ergonomics, or how easy the site is to use. Think about how the navigation works, and how simple it is for the visitor to use. Good web design will also present the information in a clear and easy to understand manner. You should always aim to make the site as easy to use as possible, if it is too complex, the visitor will simply click away.
The next thing to consider is your content, the whole point in the site, the way you communicate with your readers or customers. Each page should ideally be set up to encompass one subject, and focus on that. This feeds into the final consideration of SEO, where you should aim to optimize for one keyword per page to enable the site to be understood by search engines, and thus rank it well.
Good web design applied well will produce a fine looking web site with great user interaction and fast loading. This, along with well written and optimized content should provide visitors with a great user experience with the ultimate goal of securing a sale, or bringing them back to read more.
