Excessive use of Flash: It is a general misconception that using Flash attracts more visitors. But the truth is- it may annoy them. And it also increases the loading time of a website. It can affect the ranking of a website as the flash files are not indexed by search engines. Thus the use of Flash should be restricted to bare minimum.

Absence of Content: If a search engine finds nothing to read and index on a site, it will ultimately mar the ranking. Consequently, the site won't be able to promote its content.

Non scan able Content: Avoid giving a cluttered look to your site by stuffing too much on a page. Bullets, headings etc should be used to make it more readable. If the user is able to navigate through easily, it will definitely leave a good impression on his mind.

Complex URL structure: Choosing a simple keyword based URL will serve you a double purpose. It will not only improve the search engine ranking of the site but also appeal more to the visitor due to its simplicity.

Drop down menus: This may lead to a confusion in the mind of a visitor. All the navigation options should be visible straight away. In the absence of it, the user might face the problem finding the information he was looking for.

A website plays a crucial role in promoting any business and helping it become a large scale one. Therefore, it should be designed keeping in mind the Dos and Don't s which can make or break it.

All these errors are certainly avoidable. One only needs to work meticulously.
