You can work as a web designer without a university degree, but you must know very well the technologies that are related to web designing, the graphic materials which are necessary to achieve some applications and you should have a good portfolio, too. As a professional web designer you can either work as a service provider or you can work for a company that will hire you. Besides tutorials and online courses that you must read, it is recommended to do specialized courses.

If you want to be come a good, respected and reliable web designer, you are recommended to learn the following: HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and XML. No doubt that you still be a web designer without the last two, but they can help greatly in the future - and it is never bad to know something extra. Besides, you are advised to learn two or three graphics programs (at least one that will help you create vector graphics). Anyhow, if you want to work as a web designer, HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript and XML knowledge is the first to have. Graphics programs are recommended that you have the knowledge of Adobe Flash (and ActionScript), in addition to Programming Basics and Database Basics.

This is really important! But with required training and knowledge you are definitely going to be a very successful web designer. If you finally decide to do a course in web designing, you must always remember to look up at what certificate you will receive after finishing the courses and who will recognize them.
