Web Development in a Mobile World
It seems that every mobile user has run into it: a friend or business associate sends you an email about a funny story, a relevant news article or a video that they've come across that they've wanted to share. You click on the link and you wait for the site to open up.
And you wait...and you waitand as it finally loads up, you land on a site that's filled with Flash-based animation or images of the day's news that won't load. That may or may not break your viewing experience but it's an annoying factor in mobile web viewing: content that isn't viewable on your mobile device.
When beginning a mobile web development project, one must consider the following four bits of information to make mobile web viewing less frustrating and more enjoyable.
Become the master of redirection. Let's face it: some websites are bloated, filled with pop-up or self-starting video, banners that take forever to load or image files that take forever to load. A simple solution is to implement a redirect of your site to a mobile version, optimizing it for on the go viewing without taking away from the site visitor's experience. Should you elect to go with a mobile version, make sure to give the user a choice on which format to select as people have their own preferences.
Give it the kiss off. More and more mobile providers are going with web plans that have bandwidth caps, limiting their users on the amounts of data each user can pull down on a monthly basis. In order to combat this, web developers need to more readily embrace cleaner markup language in their coding. With new, faster loading formats like Apple-backed HTML5 becoming more of a standard for some mobile phone users, the need to adopt these cleaner coding languages is vital.
Text is king. What, you've read that somewhere else before? Yes, content is and always will be king in a person's web viewing experience. In the context of mobile web viewing, copy needs to be optimized for handheld devices, as not all are created equal. Ditch unnecessary text and key in on content that's relevant and timely.
Don't forget mobile-based browsers. For a web developer, browser testing is a daily routine: building a website, test it in browsers to make sure it doesn't break after the click of a button. Sometimes, though, mobile-based browsers are overlooked in the development process. Keep them on your checklist of items that need testing, too.
A growing number of web surfers are connecting via their iPhones and smart phones. Accounting for the trend is critical: it's time to embrace mobile technology in your future web development endeavors.
