Web Usability – Let your website speak for you
Your website is a comprehensive online document that advertises about your business to the targeted audience
. It is the most authentic piece of information which is trusted by the user for anything written on it. Therefore, your website content must be error free and truthful. If you are not honest about what you have claimed on your site, your credibility will be gone and there will be huge losses for your business. Website preparation involves several steps. Besides having key businessman acumen, you need to be creative and visualize the whole scenario from the customers point of view. Most of the times, what web designers plan and think varies greatly from what the end user wants. So, the real challenge lies in increasing the web usability of your site in the eyes of the end users. You need to analyze carefully the factors that make a site more usable to the internet visitor. Every information that the user wants must be easily available to her or him. You must deliver what your site claims. If there is difference between your delivery and claims, this will create bad impression about you in the mind of the visitor and will also force him to abandon your site. There could be a large number of graphics, text and logos on your site. Ensure that all these elements are arranged in a user friendly way. One more important point of web usability is that you should take care that links on your webpage open up in the same window. If your link opens up in a different window, the user will not be able to go to previous page by using back button. All this will frustrate him. As the saying goes, customer is the king. So, you must design your website keeping customer in focus because he is the person who provides you opportunities to sell your products to him. Moreover, you need to do frequent usability analysis of your site. This usability analysis may include the study of the websites of your competitors. You need to analyze carefully what all features your competitor provides and what all features are lacking in your own site or portal. One more point of usability analysis is that your website must download quickly, ideally in less than 10 seconds. When doing usability analysis of your site, you need to assume that a substantial number of your visitors would be using old computers with dial up internet connection. You will have to optimize your web graphics for them also. Besides
web usability, you should also need to do usability testing for your website. You should involve end users in the development phase of your site. Give them the tasks to complete like do they really like the look and feel of the site, or what they think should come up after they click a menu option or fill up a form. All such web usability testing tools will go a long way in increasing the acceptability of your business and trust among them.
