Web site Design considerations

You are going into business or expanding and you know you need a Web site, but you are not sure exactly how to start. Perhaps you are looking to start a business on the internet, and diving in because you believe the initial cash outlay will not be too high to get into business. Before you get started, you need to assess a few things about yourself and your goals.

Define the purpose

If you have not defined the purpose, stop now and do so! If you want to promote yourself or a new business, you need to think through a logical step by step menu of key items. Then you need to create the content for each of those key items, and most of that should be text so the search engines will pick it up. The search engines won't pick up and index that nifty graphic you want to use to tell the world about you.

The key questions are the same as if you were writing a news story who, what, where, when, why and how. Be sure you are thorough without getting pedantic in answering those questions. Just the facts!

Assess yourself. Do you have the technical skills to create an attractive layout and color scheme? Do you know how to optimize graphics that you want on the page? Do you have the tools available?

If you've answered no' to any of these questions, be prepared for a hefty investment of both time and money.

Learning how to create color schemes and layouts will take fidgeting, internal fighting " and getting input from others. Just because YOU like it does not mean your audience will. Nothing will kill your site's productivity faster than putting on text in a color that makes it unreadable on the background you have chosen.

Basic web design tools generally come bundled with productivity suites, such as FrontPage with Microsoft Office, and a few lighter weight programs are available for free or cheap on sites such as Tucows. Otherwise, expect to put down $200 to $500 for software tools just for the layout. And if you don't have any graphics tools, another $150 to $600 for those.

Define your audience

Think this through. The words you use to define who will find your site are critical, so if you're promoting Samoyed breeding, be sure that first paragraph on your first page says so! And talk to that audience " don't try to educate the rest of us who don't know a thing about it on the primary pages " but DO include some expertise information on your site, in your FAQ or a "General Information About" page.

Do not use file types that will bog down your site!

A huge Flash animation, a song, or that 4 megabyte graphic file that looks SO good at full size that you are dying to share them are TERRIBLE ideas. Give your AUDIENCE the option on whether or not they want to tie up their bandwidth to see or hear these things " don't set your page to automatically send them to the viewer. Unless your goal is "click death" and an average page-view time of three seconds.

Choose a domain name carefully.

Your domain name says something about the Web site right off the bat " unless of course you're creating the new Fark or Yahoo, then just go with it and hope the audience finds you. Otherwise, try to pick words that are actually related to your subject matter.

Do not use free hosting unless you absolutely have no other choice.

If you want to be taken seriously, then spend the 10 bucks on the domain name registration, and you can find many cheap hosting plans that run in the $30 to $50 a year plans. If the traffic gets to extreme to handle it, then purchase a different hosting plan elsewhere.

Outsource your project.
