Website marketing strategy - how to split test to boost profits
One way to boost your online profits with hardly any effort is to Split Test. This is the process of testing your rates of conversion based upon the amount of traffic that goes to different versions of a sales or squeeze page. You can do this manually or with an automated software program. Either way, you have to put in a reliable, accurate tracking system.
Why split test? Even the smallest variations in your sales & squeeze pages can cause big fluctuations in your traffic. Don't be fooled by small percentage changes in your conversion rates. One percent either way doesn't sound like much, but it is, when you put that percentage in dollar terms. For example, if 10,000 visitors make you a profit of $3,000 and that equals a 1% conversion rate, you might be happy with that. But with a 2% conversion rate, those same 10,000 visitors would make you $6,000.
Ideally, you will want to test no fewer than two headlines, two action calls and two pricing points on a consistent basis. And don't forget to frequently test several versions of graphics, sales copy, product names and sales slogans. It's smart to consistently test and adjust the elements of your sites to make sure that you are consistently getting the highest possible number of conversions, and find out if not, why not.
As mentioned above, you can split test manually or with an automated program. In manually split testing you will simply take two forms of your sales letter, for example, and send each version the same level of traffic. If you can, you will want to send the traffic to each version from the same or similar sources in order to keep all of the factors as equal as possible. If you send to both versions the same level of traffic, but the traffic to one version comes from Adwords and the traffic to the other comes from a blog, your conversion rates may be wildly different and you won't know if the variation was due to the sales letter or the difference in the source of traffic.
Make sure that the test traffic you send to the different versions of your letter is high enough to be a representative sample of the levels of traffic that you want to see on a consistent level.
Be sure that you implement a reliable analytical program so that your test results will be interpreted accurately. Google Analytics is a great program for this - and it's free.
Whether you test manually or go the automated route, you'll have peace of mind, and higher profits, when you know that you are using the best versions and placement of your tools to generate the highest levels of traffic to your sites.
