substitute the a, b and c values in quadratic formula

'x' = ' (-(-10)+ sqrt((-10)^2 -4(1)(24)))/(2 xx 1) '

'x' = '(-(-10)- sqrt((-10)^2 -4(1)(24)))/(2 xx 1)'

' x' = '(10 + sqrt (4))/2' = '12/2'

'x' = '(10 - sqrt (4))/2' = '8/2'

x = 6 or x = 4

Example 2:

Solve equation (9x 1)2 81 = 0.

Solution:

Applying square root method: (9x 1) 2 = 81

9x 1 = 'sqrt81' or 9x - 1 = 'sqrt81'

9x 1 = 9 or 9x 1 = 9

Solve equations:

9x 1+1= 9+1 or 9x -1+1= -9 +1

9x = 10 or 9x = 8

x = '10/9' or x = '8/9'

Solution:

The major axis length is 27 and the eccentricity is 10.

So the semi major axis length is a = '27 / 2'

The minor axis length 2b = '2(27 / 2)sqrt(10^2 - 1) = 81sqrt(11)'
