Week 9 College Football Preview and Heisman Trophy Betting

Betting college football underdogs against the spread (ATS) this season has not been nearly as profitable as betting on the dogs in the NFL but after some of the upsets in Week 8, online sportsbooks have had to rethink the betting odds for top favorites this Saturday.

The 11th ranked Oklahoma Sooners (6-1), who entered the week as the No. 1 team on the BCS rankings, were knocked down when Missouri's explosive passing game totalled 308 yards in a 36-27 win. It wasn't smoke and mirrors behind the Tigers win, either, as Missouri (7-0) also pounded the ball for 178 yards on the ground, hanging around long enough to surge to victory in the fourth quarter.

It's catapulted the Tigers to seventh on the AP poll and right to the top of the list for handicappers looking to ride the win streak to the bank. This week Missouri will face another tough task at 14th ranked Nebraska and early odds from sports books show the Cornhuskers as a -7.5 point favorite.

Oklahoma State and LSU were another pair of schools suffering their first defeat and the news for the Cowboys only got worse when star wide receiver Justin Blackmon was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor DUI charge.

Kansas State hosts Oklahoma State (game 161) on Saturday and several books have pulled the line off the board on the news that Blackmon will not play. Blackmon had 62 catches for 1,112 yards and 14 TDs this year so QB Brandon Weeden will be forced to spread the ball to his other targets but this offense could struggle.

Early lines at sportsbooks online showed Cowboys (-5) but that number is more likely to resurface at less than a field goal.

ATS UPDATE

College favorites are still covering at a rate of 52.6-percent on the season (247-223-8 ATS) and overall, favorites in Week 8 were a huge success for online bettors, going 32-19-1 ATS (62.8-percent).

The most profitable play for football bettors willing to lay the points is road favs who are hitting close to 60-percent in the past month (41-30-2) against the number.

After beating Louisiana Tech 49-20 SU on Tuesday night, Moore has led Boise State to 21-straight wins the longest active winning streak in the nation. Boise State has also won 15 consecutive road games and scored 48-plus points in five of their past six games.

The other players available at +300 are Mark Ingram, Terrelle Pryor and LaMichael Pryor.
