Located to the south of Beihai City one finds the 25 square kilometer Weizhou Island. China's youngest and largest volcanic island, Weizhou Island is composed of volcanic rocks and lava. Many features of former volcanic activity are to be seen in the southern part of the island with molten rocks and marine erosion having formed colourful and bizarre formations including hills, caverns, terraces and pillars, creating a unique wonderland. On the other hand the northern section of the island is flatter and lower, with beaches, rocks and sand dikes. The seabeds adjacent to the island contain coral formations with fantastic mesmerizing colours. The amazing attributes of the island have earned it the moniker of Fairy Island of the South China Sea'.

With its sensational landscape, dense vegetation and honest uncomplicated inhabitants, Weizhou Island is a delight for any adventurous traveller interested in exploring the island. Many sea animal varieties are to be found here, along with a dazzling variety of local and migratory birds.

The wildlife found here includes such fascinating creatures as dolphins, whales, seals, jellyfish and squid amongst many others. Local snacks to be enjoyed by visitors to the island include such exotic delights as prawn, sea cucumber, oyster, horseshoe crab, dugong, scallop and sea horse just to name a few.

The island has also experienced historical incidents, with French colonizers in the 19th century having built the Gothic-inspired Catholic Church in the village known as Shengtang. Catholics from France also constructed the Weizhou Chengzai Church. During the period of Vietnamese control, many pagodas and temples were built on the island.

Several sites of interest are to be found in Weizhou Island. One of these is the Dripping Screen, a 10 meter cliff by the seaside which resembles a person's head after centuries of natural forces.

Not to be missed is the Northern Bay Seaside Park which features a 2.3 kilometer stretch of flat clean beach bordering the usually calm seas. Many visitors frequent the site to engage in water sports or simply enjoy the salubrious environment. The Colourful Beach so-called because of its vivid volcanic relics is another site of interest.
