Well Water Filtration Systems - How to Find the Best and Avoid Bad Tasting Water and Contamination
Well water filtration systems can be as simple as single stage cotton-fiber particle filters
. They can also include dozens of different steps. How does a well-owner know what kind of system is best? That's what this article looks at.
The reason that there are so many different steps in some designs is because there are so many different contaminants in some freshwater sources. Even the underground sources, which were protected in the past, have become contaminated.
Biological contaminants, which include bacteria, virus, fungus and parasites, are present in some wells. Chemical contaminants are among the most common kinds of contaminants. Run off from nearby industry and farms have led to that. People have to deal with pesticides, herbicides, MTBE, VOCs, THMs and hundreds of other chemicals.
Anything that exists in the rocks may also be present in the freshwater. Naturally occurring substances are not always thought of as contaminants. They can include minerals, which are safe for consumption.
But, other naturally occurring compounds are not safe for consumption. They include heavy metals, such as lead and mercury. Arsenic and perchlorate are also naturally occurring substances.
The result is that some well water filtration systems have a lot of work to do; others have very little. The best advice is for homeowners to have their wells tested on a regular basis to see what hazards are flowing out of their faucets.
For every contaminant, there is an effective step for reduction. Even fluoride levels are too high in some areas. It takes a special kind of aluminum particle to reduce fluoride. The risks of excessive fluoride consumption are not completely understood. It is known that exposure to too much fluoride during childhood causes tooth discoloration. It seems ironic that something which prevents tooth decay can also cause discoloration when exposure is excessive.
Most well water filtration systems are designed to remove particulates, such as clay or sand. The size of the particle filter is the big consideration here. If it is certified to filter down to one micron, it can remove parasitic cysts too.
In many cases, well-owners need a system at the point where the pipes come into their home and then another at their kitchen faucets. This is something like the system used in public treatment facilities. The initial steps remove large particles, while the last steps remove the smallest ones.
For example, standard well water filtration systems may not be effective against tiny chemical contaminants; a faucet filter may also be necessary. Some of the best faucet filters help to balance mineral content and improve taste, while removing chemical contaminants.
In some cases, well-owners must use chlorine or other disinfectants. Chlorine tastes bad, and research indicates that consuming it regularly causes health problems. Even certain types of cancer have been attributed to the consumption of chlorinated water!
Those people with private wells are not the only ones who need home purifiers. Anyone serviced by a public treatment facility has issues to deal with too. But, I hope the information above will help people choose the right well water filtration systems for their homes. It is impossible to overemphasize the importance of clean water.
