Wet Suits And Dry Suits- Information

Wetsuits and drysuits, both are worn by people engaged in water activities

. The purpose of wetsuits and drysuits is to provide thermal insulation to the wearer, buoyancy to the body and resistance from abrasion while surfing, diving and canoing.

These suits are made with special technique that provides body thermal insulation to keep us warm while soaked into water of freezing temperature.

There are basic differences that lie between the two:

A wetsuit is basically composed of Neoprene which works best only if it is fitted tight to the body. This well fitted suit traps water inside and normalize the water temperature with the body heat that provides insulation to wearer while immersed in the water. If it doesn't fit well to the body, the water between the body and the suit will continually replace with the cold water and the purpose of wearing wetsuit will not be fulfilled.

Wetsuits come in thickness ranging from 2mm to 9mm, depending on the varied usages of wetsuits and the temperature of water.

High quality wetsuits are made of toughtex neoprene which protects it from being torn, especially when your body gets collided with coral or wreck. Whereas drysuits are made up of neoprene or foam rubber, or we can best describe it as a hybrid of both. The material used in manufacturing drysuits is waterproof that protects the body to get in touch with cold water. Drysuit aims to provide passive thermal protection while the person is immersed in water.

Drysuits are used in extreme cases like:

1. For longer period of immersion in water, where wetsuit may not be comfortable to the wearer

2. When performing water activity in the water below 15C

3. Integrated with accessories like boots, gloves and helmets that protects its users when working in hazardous situation under water.

A drysuit basically protects water from entering inside, unlike wetsuits, as it is tightly sealed around neck, wrists and ankles, keeping the water out. It is certainly not meant to be worn in warm water and is comparatively costlier than wetsuits.
