What A Shopfitter Does
You may have a hard time looking for a decent work nowadays
. If you are unlucky, you can be one of those who have been on hiatus for a year. That is why you have to prepare well before simply delivering your resume to a prospective employer; you have to identify jobs that are in demand. The retail business is surely one that you shouldn't miss in considering. However, you should not think that being in sales is the only option. There are jobs that are not necessarily in sales but in fact, are still connected to retail businesses, including shopfitting.
The retail sector could never flourish without the help of fit out companies. These firms make it possible for shops to attract people like magnets and create the conditions for sales. Of course, these cannot proceed and produce products without professional people in its fold. You can certainly be a part of its workforce and start building a profession. The retail sector has been stable despite the economic crunch, which is why shopfitting continues to be in demand. You can be assured that there are many employment opportunities in this field.
You cannot just join
fit out companies without any level of training though. Before you can hand in your resume, you must be trained already in carpentry and in other craftsman's trade. If you want to have some skills in designing, you may also take courses in draftsmanship. Knowing both carpentry and designing can be a huge advantage once you apply for a job. A shopfitting firm would not have a second thought about hiring someone who is truly qualified.
It does not matter if you are still a newbie in shopfitting once you get hired. No vocational school can guarantee that their graduates are already masters in their respective fields. Any ace shopfitter would surely confirm that their more intensive training was not in a vocational school. They got it during the first few years in employment. Therefore, you can be an expert yourself only after being actually hired.
As a vocational school graduate, you may think of immediately working as freelance shopfitter. There is one big disadvantage in this option though. Retail shop owners and managers are known to hire only the services of fit out companies and not freelancing individuals. The wisest option, therefore, is to work for a shopfitting firm first and acquire experience while being its crewmember.
After a few years working as part of a crew, you may be able to learn more than enough about running a shopfitting firm. By this time also, you may have saved a good amount of money for starting up your own company. Of course, you should not expect to be immediately as big as the older fit out companies. However, the potential of your business's growth is always there for as long as the retail market is healthy. One day your company can have a bigger share of the clientele and more projects to work on.
