Therefore, be careful: a mixed-breed puppy could end up being registered with the AKC as a "purebred."

Of course, the vast majority of breeders are honest and a sign touting "AKC puppies for sale" really means they have registered puppies to sell. But purchasing an AKC registered puppy does not guarantee its quality. More importantly, AKC registration does not mean the puppies are the picture of health or that they are great examples of their breed.

If you see a sign for AKC puppies for sale and you decide to investigate, speak with the breeder at length. Ask her which ones she feels are the brightest and most alert. She knows the puppies' temperaments well, so she can tell you which might be best for a home with small children and which ones will need a lot of human direction and attention.

As you narrow your choices down, watch how the puppy interacts with its mother and siblings. Try this test: when the puppy is facing away from you, make a sharp noise (clap your hands, for example). If the puppy jumps and seems startled, it may be too timid for a boisterous home. If it makes no move at all, that may indicate the puppy is deaf or at least hard of hearing.

Try to visit the breeder of the AKC puppies for sale a few times to watch the puppies at different times of the day and to see if the puppy you've preliminary selected can truly become a part of your family.
