What Are Flatbed And Refrigerated Trailers Used For?
When a courier company has grown into a larger scale transportation company rather
than just a parcel carrier, they have a need for a greater diversity of equipment in their fleet. In addition to just having larger trucks, they are also going to have trailers which are outfitted for a variety of different specialty applications to use with those trucks. A Delivery Milwaukee WI company that has a larger truck fleet might have several different types of trailers. Among the most common of these are refrigerated and flatbed trailers.
These two trailers are examples of equipment that is used primarily to transport very specific types of goods. Usually, this means that only one company will have hired the trailer for their use. Specialty trailers aren't used as commonly for LTL shipments, and are more commonly hired out just to a single company that may be shipping with them.
A flatbed trailer is essentially a regular trailer with the sides and the top removed, leaving just a large platform on wheels. While at first this might not sound very practical, it is actually very necessary whenever you are moving anything that is larger, either taller or wider, than what would fit within the confines of a regular trailer box. Any oversized cargo is often shipped on a flatbed. These trailers are used to ship large industrial parts, agricultural machinery, vehicles, and even houses and buildings are sometimes moved on flatbeds.
A refrigerated trailer is a unit that has air conditioning in it so that it can be kept at a certain temperature. These are units that are used for transporting anything that can become damaged if exposed to excessive heat. There are more types of goods that can be damaged by heat than you might at first realize. Medical material always needs to be transported properly refrigerated, but so do many food products, especially frozen and fresh foods.
Either of these types of trailers are usually going to cost more than a regular one when you're hiring them from the courier company. The flat deck trailer can cost more as well, because if you're shipping a wide load you may need to hire pilot vehicles in order for the shipment to be legal on the road. Refrigerated units are also much more expensive to buy, run, and maintain then regular trucks, accounting for their increased cost. Demand also drivers the price up on specialized trailers.
