What Are Mobile Trackers? Are They Really Helpful & How Do They Work?

Mobile tracker is a device which tracks a mobile by finding the current position of a mobile phone

. A tracker may track the position irrespective of the fact if the device is in moving position or stationary. Current position can be found either by the multiateration of signals between the antenna of network and the cell phone or by simply using GPS (Global Positioning System). The process of multiateration also known as hyperbolic tracking of radio signals requires the emission of roaming signals. In multiateration difference in distance of two or more broadcasting stations of known locations and which emit signals at known times is measured. This results in infinite number of locations which satisfy the measurement. On plotting these locations a hyperbolic curve is formed. Then a second curve is produced by taking another measurement with different pair of broadcasting stations. On comparing the two curves we get a few possible locations. Thus a mobile is tracked using multiateration technology.

But at present, new and more preferred in comparison to multiateration is GPS as it gives time and location details in any weather and at any place near or on earth where at least four GPS satellites can see without any obstruction. In GPS tracking unit, using GPS location of a mobile is recorded at regular intervals and then sent to tracking unit or to a central data base location using SMS, GPRS, radio or satellite modem enclosed in the tracking unit. So using this tracking systems one can know the location of a mobile in real time or one can analyze the locations track later.

Thus mobile tracker has multiple applications. The technique is employed in several Multi Nationals to monitor and improve the performance output of their employees. There is a huge scope for this technique in the near future as well where it may open up more application fronts.
