What Are Multifocal Glasses

Increasing age brings with it vision disorders on which human beings have little control

. It is known that after the age of forty, many individuals develop presbyopia. This eyesight problem makes simple functions like reading and watching nearby objects difficult. If a person already had visual impairment before presbyopia, then he/she will need a pair of glasses with dual focal points.

Multifocal glasses, as the name suggests have more than one focal point on their lenses. The most common and the oldest kind of multifocal glasses are the bifocal glasses which have lenses divided into two vertical halves. The upper half has a lower focal point and is used to view objects at a distance, while the lower half has a higher power and it aids in viewing objects nearby. A visible line runs through the lenses dividing it into two halves, which results in sudden and drastic change of power which might lead to headaches.

Another kind of multifocal glasses which is fast gaining popularity is the varifocal Glasses. They are also known as progressive glasses as the lenses of these glasses have a gradual increase of power from the top of the lenses towards the bottom, with the bottommost part having the highest power. As these lenses have gradual increase of power, without any visible lines, there is no occurrence of image jump resulting in a smoother transition among various powers. Like the bifocals, the upper half is used in distance viewing while the lower half for nearer ones. The middle region is used for viewing objects at an intermediate range, for example computers.

Online retailers have provided a way for people to purchase affordable eyeglasses, including multifocal glasses, at a fraction of the cost of brick and mortar retail stores. The reason is simple: less overhead means savings transferred onto the consumer. In many cases, the cost is only a fraction of what you would normally pay for a pair of glasses, which often results in allowing a person to order more than one pair of glasses so that should their glasses get broken or lost, they are not left in the dark. The Internet has given us many advantages, including allowing consumers to benefit from purchasing products from retailers that have less overhead, which means fewer markups from the wholesale price and more savings and options for the consumer.
