What Are Sertraline Side Effects?
Sertraline is a medicine which is used to treat depression that is it is an anti depressant
. It is sold under many brand names like Zoloft, Lustral etc. it belongs to the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors class of drugs that are also popularly known as SSRI. It is used to treat and cure depression in adults for short terms only. It is also used to treat problems like anxiety, panic attacks and disorders like obsessive compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder in children.
Although it has many advantages, yet we should not ignore the sertraline side effects. Like every medicine has some side effects, there are some sertraline side effects also, some of which are common and mild in nature and some of those are very rarely seen in patients but are very severe.
Some of the common sertraline side effects are aggressiveness, strange changes in normal or routine behavior, suicidal thoughts or behavior, anxiety or panic attacks in adult patients, extreme mood changes which vary from euphoria to dysphoria, insomnia or sleeplessness, feeling restless, nausea, dry mouth, a noticeable decrease in libido, feeling dizzy, diarrhea, tremors, headaches, weight loss etc. these are some of very common side effects of sertraline. There are some other severe side effects and allergic reactions of sertraline. Some of them can be like difficulty in breathing, swelling of face or swelling of tongue, swelling in lips or swelling in throat or skin rashes or hives. Though these are some of the very rare side effects but they are very severe in nature and you should immediately consult your doctor or rush to the nearest hospital.
There are some withdrawal symptoms also if the medication of sertraline is stopped instantly or suddenly. Some of these withdrawal symptoms are cold sweat, dehydration, dysarthria, edema, erectile dysfunction, gingivitis, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome, mania, anxiety, weight gain, weight loss etc. please note that these are some of the withdrawal symptoms; it is not a comprehensive list of all the sertraline side effects.
You should always consult your doctor before starting any medication. As a qualified medical professional, he or she will assess your health conditions and your problems and then give you a correct advice. You should listen to your doctors advice and follow it. If he or she prescribes you this medication, make sure you take the med in prescribed dosage only. Do not over dose or under dose just because you feel like it.
Sertraline is a prescription drug because just like other drugs which belong to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors class of drug, this med too has addictive properties and is known to make the patients dependant and addicted if the medication is taken for a long period of time. Therefore it is used only for short term treatment of depression and is a prescribed drug. Sertraline is easily available in pharmacies and also online, only if you have a prescription for it.
