She had not enjoyed the black and white segments of the movie either, but that was because they were drab and boring. The appearance of the witch, however, had sent her scarpering behind the sofa, from where she peeked out while her bemused Mom and Dad looked on for a few moments. Then she insisted that they forward through the movie to skip the scenes that featured the witch. Furthermore, whenever her mother asked her if she could apply some witch hazel lotion to an abrasion and she got a lot of scrapes she baulked and tottered away in fear.

A little older now, and a little wiser. But Emma still didnt like witch hazel lotion. She understood that some natural skin care products were good like the hairbrush and some were bad like the Fulsol container that her parents warned her was not a toy. But she included the witch hazel lotion among the list of things to be avoided. Indeed, it wasnt until she scraped her knee that the benefits of witch hazel were realized in her four-year-old mind. She limped into the kitchen from the back yard, her eyes brimming with tears.

Her mother examined the scrape that ran down her knee to her shin. She then sat Emma down in a kitchen chair and disappeared for a few moments. Emma began to bawl, her choking hot sobs causing her little blouse to be saturated with drool and snot. On her mothers return, she held a cotton swab in her hand. Emmas mother wiped the little girls tender skin. Emmas sobbing ebbed away as the cool relief that the swab provided took away the pain.

Magic! her mother smiled.

Magic? Emma repeated in surprise.
