There is much confusion about the causes and effects of the NATO air strike in Pakistan

which resulted in the deaths of about two dozen Pakistani troops. Details are sketchy but what we do know is that A NATO air strike into Pakistan killed a number of Pakistani troops. The air strikes were conducted on the area from where NATO troops came under fire from within the Pakistani border.

There are differing stories about what happened but we know that something did happen. If NATO attacked positions from within Pakistan one of two things had to happen. Either the fire did come from the area or NATO may a grave mistake in their targeting. I find it hard to believe that permission was given to conduct air strikes into an area where no fires were emanating. There are too many checks and balances in place for such a mistake to occur. Rules of Engagement are very stringent because NATO is doing all that it can to insure that innocents are not killed in combat. In most cases as was in this incident permission to return fire has to be granted to local commanders after they are fired upon. Once this painstaking process is completed and higher headquarters is assured that there is no mistake about the target area then permission to return fire is granted.

The biggest kicker in this incident is that NATO forces were fired upon from areas which were occupied by Pakistani military forces. The Pakistanis had claimed that they had cleared these areas of enemy militants. If that was the case the question is who was it that was doing the shooting? Circumstantial evidence points to the Pakistani Army. Insurgents have a history of going to areas close to where the Pakistani Army is located and firing at NATO forces but once again the Pakistanis say that the area had been cleared. Either they were sadly mistaken or they have been aiding the insurgents in their attacks.

Another possibility is that the Pakistani Army itself was responsible for firing on NATO forces. This seems to be the most probable explanation based on what we know. The Pakistanis have been accused of duplicity in this operation on many occasions. It is strange that so many high level al-Qaeda operatives have been killed in Pakistan. It is also peculiar that the insurgents have operated with so much impunity in this war. If the US and NATO had been able to chase them across the border and dispatch of them as necessary the war would have been completed a long time ago.

Pakistan has responded swiftly to Saturdays cross-border air strike in the countrys northwest, shutting down NATO supply lines into neighboring Afghanistan and ordering the United States to vacate an air base in Pakistan within 15 days. This incident is another source of embarrassment for the Pakistanis which they will have to live down. It shows the world how they have been using duplicitous tactics during this ordeal.

The relationship between the US and Pakistan has been a marriage of convenience at most. Pakistan puts up a semblance of cooperation while they pocket billions of dollars of US aid money. They have shut down supply routes since this incident which hinders the resupply of NATO troops in the area. The US and NATO should see clearly from this behavior that the intentions of the Pakistani Government are not honorable.

Im sure that NATO realizes that this situation is untenable. It is only a matter of time before they withdraw their troops from Afghanistan. President Karzai seems to regret having NATO troops in his country also so maybe they should just pull out and leave.Military Ring Express
