What Are The Causes Of Hum In Ceiling Fans

Fans are a basic necessity for each and every home

. Fans come in different designs but the function of all the designs and types are almost the same. Ceiling fans are one of them. Fans are used to adjust regulate the room temperature to the desired level. They are very useful in summer season. But often fans start to hum, creak or buzz one for many reasons, which is quite irritating at times. Fortunately, there are ways to get rid of these humming sounds through determining the causes for that.

The Blades

Blades are important part of the fans. Without fan blades fan is nothing except a bearing attached to a rod. Blades are so attached to the fan that it distributes the weight evenly to keep the balance. If blades are not properly attached or a hodgepodge of different fan blades disturb the weight balance and inertia and hence the fan starts vibrating.

Light Fixtures

If your fan has any light fixtures, there must be a chance that the noise is coming from these loose glass fixtures. Sometimes it happens that a bolt or screw left loose while changing the light bulbs, which over time compel the glass fixtures to vibrate and hum. This is not tough to handle. Just check the fixtures and any loose screws or bolts on these fixtures. If you find any loose screw or bolt just fasten that with appropriate screwdriver. Properly installed fixtures and lights will not vibrate or produce any noise.

Lubrication

Lubrication keeps the fans from producing noises. Usually fans come with lasting lubricant. But for some reasons this lubricant unsettled due to lack of use or staying in the packing for long period of time. The lubricants come off from the bearings and these lubricant settlings may cause the noise problem. There is a simple remedy to it; just run your fan for entire day- this will allow the fan to send the lubricants settlings back to the bearings.

Dimmer Switch

Some fans have dimmer switches. Dimmer switches can be a cause of noise. Buzzing or humming can be associated with these switches. This is so because speed settings on switch are unsuited with fan. It is important to buy a dimmer switch compatible with you fan and speed settings. The best way is to purchase a switch on time you are buying a fan. You can use pull chain on the fans to control or adjust the speed of the fan instead of dimmer switches. Simply avoid the switch by attaching both the wires together.

Defective Fans

It can be possible that the fan has some manufacturing fault or defect. What you need to do is to inspect the fan properly and look for any cause for noise. If you dont find any cause but still noise coming, then contact to the store from where you purchased that fan or if possible contact the manufacturer of the fan. They will definitely provide you a replacement for that defective fan.
