What Are The Good Reasons To Get A Stairlift?
As it is the case in many other countries in the Western world
, the US population is getting older. A survey that took place in 2009 estimates that 12.8% of the overall US population is aged over 65 years old. What's more, according to those same estimates, the birth rate did not exceed 13.83 births/1,000 people and the death rate was of 8.38 deaths/1,000 people. Furthermore, a survey that was conducted for the National Center for Health Statistics in 2005 showed that over 13 million people were receiving home care in the US. 70% of those people were over the age of 65 years old.
The main purpose of a stairlift is to help elderly and disabled people climb up and down, thus providing them with an easier access to every room in their house. Therefore providing them with a new sense of independence as they are able to move around their home more freely. What's more, most stairlift manufacturers supply tailor-made products so that the device can be adapted to any type of staircase, whether the staircase is straight or curved, indoors or outdoors. They are therefore very versatile and can be fitted to any type of staircase.
Another concern for the elderly is the risk of falling over because many of those falls often result in fractures. What's more, most of the over 65 year old badly at least once a year and 5 to 6% of these falls result in broken bones. The main factors that put the elderly at falling down the stairs are impaired vision, reduced strength and poor balance. Stairlifts will help prevent this problem by enabling them to climb up and down the stairs effortlesly, therefore helping to prevent potential bone breakage.
Furthermore, if an elderly person decides to have a stairlift fitted to their home, it can facilitate their access to homecare, because the stairlift allows them to be more independent around their house. Homecare is often the prefered solution when caring for the elderly, because there is no need for them to leave their home, which can sometimes affect them psychologically.
Stairlifts therefore offer a greater independence to the elderly as they allow them to access every room in their house. However, they also contribute to creating a safer environment within their home as they help prevent falls. That is also, why they make it easier for the elderly to benefit from homecare.
