What Are The Risks Of Surrogacy To The Surrogate Mother?
When talking about the risks of surrogacy, most people jump to the conclusion that often a surrogate mother decides to keep the baby
. They feel that commercial surrogacy is risky for the intended parents (the couple who are the actual parents of the baby) but not too risky for the surrogate herself. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Surrogate mothers take on more of the risks of surrogacy than the intended parents, in many ways. Usually this is because they jump into a situation before really understanding what commercial surrogacy is really about. All parties assume some risks, and it is equally important that everyone does proper research before beginning a surrogate mothering journey.
But lets talk about the specific risks a surrogate mother has when deciding on commercial surrogacy. First, there are the physical risks.
Yes, it is uncommon for a woman to lose her life now-a-days during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, but it still happens in the United States and it can happen with surrogate mothering. It is rare, and extremely unlikely, but it is possible.
Medical complications are much more common. Surrogate mothers risk their reproductive organs each time they commit to a commercial surrogacy arrangement. Many have lost their uteruses, or their ability to conceive any further children of their own. This is why it is extremely important that all women considering surrogacy have completed their own family.
Because gestational surrogacy has a higher chance of multiples such as twins or triplets, there is also an increased likelihood of some sort of medical complications. And since gestational surrogates are subjected to natural and synthetic hormonal drugs, there is also talk of an increased risk for ovarian cancer later in life.
Surrogate mothers also undergo financial risks. Some commercial surrogacy journeys go wrong, and intended parents stop paying the surrogate mother her compensation. In addition, since all the medical bills are in her name (she is, after all, the patient) if the insurance company decides not to pay the bills, and the intended parents do not pay them, it is the surrogate mother who they take to court and garnish wages. It is the surrogate mother who gets the instance reported to the credit agencies.
And then there are some women who choose to become surrogate mothers and get more emotionally involved than they thought they would. Some women do feel overwhelming feelings of loss after the birth of the surrogate baby. Some women carry these emotional scars long into the future.
