What Are The Various Parts Of A Cigar?
Knowing the parts of a cigar can be a great aid when applying butane lighters to tobacco
. If you don't know the foot from the cap or the wrapper from the binder, you might just find that your smoke is not as enjoyable as it should be. Knowing where to place your flame is only part of the process. The rest requires that you know how your cigar is made, what components go into your smoke and how those disparate components come together to form a whole. Here, you'll find a bit of information about the anatomy of a cigar.
Wrapper: The wrapper is the outer part of the cigar, the part that comes into contact with your fingers and lips and the part that holds the cigar together. This is usually made from a special leaf, often grown under screened covers. Naturally, tobacco leaves used for wrappers cannot be very thick, or the entire cigar would not be enjoyable.
Binder: Below the wrapper, you will find the binder. This is what holds the filler in place. Usually, the binder is made from a tougher part of the plant and has almost no flavor of its own. This is an important point, as placing butane lighters to a flavored binder can produce strange tastes in your smoke.
Filler: This is the interior of your cigar, the tobacco that fills the tube made by the binder and wrapper and the portion set alight by butane lighters. The filler is usually a blend of tobacco from different parts of the plant. For instance, filler from the lower portions of the plant usually burns better, while filler from the upper portions provides the best flavor. A good blend will offer the best mix of these properties and help ensure an even, tasteful smoke.
Head/Cap: The head, or cap, of the cigar is the closed end, the end that you must cut through. This is also the end that will go into your mouth, through which you will draw smoke. When cutting the head, try to move about 1/8th of an inch from the very end and make your cut, before using butane lighters to fire it up.
Foot: The foot is the open end of the cigar, the point of ignition. This end is usually open when you purchase the cigar. Most of the time, the band will be near the opposite end from the cigar's foot.
