What Are Type 2 Diabetes Complications?

Diabetes can often prove fatal if not treated properly

. People often consider type 2 diabetes lightly and dont try for early treatment but little do they know that it is very dangerous for their health. Type 2 diabetes can have both long and short term adverse effects on ones health. As it is directly related to the blood sugar levels, it is effective on each and every organ inside the human body.

If not treated properly and on time, type 2 diabetes can cause severe complications that may even be permanent. Some of the long term complications may develop over a long span of time, but they can be very lethal and suddenly become life threatening. One of the long term complications caused by diabetes is the heart and blood vessels disease. Type 2 diabetes can severely increase the risk of heart problems such as angina that is also known as coronary heart disease. It also increases the risk of heart attack, clogging and narrowing of arteries and high blood pressure. Studies have shown that 75% of the people suffering from type 2 diabetes die of heart related disease. It also states that the risk of heart attack doubles in the first five years of suffering from type 2 diabetes.

This diabetes also attacks the nervous system and causes nerve damage. It is due to the property of type 2 diabetes that severely damages the blood vessels which in turn affect the nourishment and growth of nerves present in them. This situation is most imminent in the legs. It causes the sensation of tingling or burning in the toes, feet and gradually grows upwards. If not treated well, the nervous damage can increase to the extent where the patient loses all senses of feel, touch and movement in the limb. Sometimes, the nerves present in the digestive system are also effected that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, indigestion and constipation.

One major organ that is most affected is the kidney. Kidneys are home to millions of blood capillaries, blood vessels and clusters of arteries from which they remove the waste from our blood. As in type 2 diabetes, blood has high sugar levels which damages this waste filtering system and leads to permanent kidney failure.

Eye damage is another severe complication caused by type 2 diabetes. There are blood capillaries present in the retina of the eye; diabetes can damage these vessels and cause reduction in eyesight or permanent blindness. Cataracts and glaucoma known as severe vision conditions are also a potential risk for type 2 diabetes patients.

As mentioned earlier that diabetes causes nerve damage in the feet, in addition to nerve damage, it also causes poor blood flow which becomes the reason for foot damage in case of even a slight injury. If small cuts or wound are left unattended, the foot complication can reach to the extent of foot or leg amputation. Blood vessels and blood itself is present all around the body, the effects of diabetes are thus countless and complications can reach to life threatening levels if appropriate treatment is not provided.
