What Are Winter Tires?

Vehicles have tires and they are the bit between the car and the road

, right, we all know that. But did you know that there are different types of tires for all sorts of different situations? Well there are and very good they are too. You get summer tires for warm weather. Off-road tires for driving off-road and winter tires which are for, you guessed it, winter driving. But what makes winter tires any different from the other types of tire that are available? Read on and you might find out.

First of all winter tires are designed for poor winter weather when the air is cold and there is snow and sleet and ice around. In places that have warm and sunny hot winters then winter tires really arent a great idea.

You see winter tires have been designed to handle the worst that winter weather can throw at you and still keep you on the road and pointing in the right direction. They do this in several clever ways and are always improving as technology increases the quality of the tires that are available to purchase.

Winter tires have a rubber compound that is specially made to cope with cold weather and stay soft and sticky. Many summer grade tires will become stiff and hard when they are introduced to extremely cold weather and this is bad news for grip. The rubber in summer tires is designed for warm weather and they are great in these temperatures but in extreme winter weather they do not perform too well.

When you fit winter tires to your vehicle it is important to change all of the tires. If you just change the two drive wheels then you could suffer from severe problems with performance. By only fitting two winter grade tires you are making the grip that your vehicle has with the road uneven and this can make breaking, accelerating and steering more dangerous and difficult. So dont try and save money as you are risking your safety.

Winter tires have deeper and often wider tread patterns to deal with ice and snow and other extreme conditions. The treads are also often harder to cut through the ice and other obstructions on the surface of the road and get a grip on the tar. In times gone by all winter tires were fitted with metal studs to gain a better grip. This is no longer the case and studded tires are rarely used. They are however still good when condition are as bad as they can get. The problem with studded tires is that they are incredibly expensive and very noisy. Whilst standard winter tires are a little noisier than some other types of tire they are by no means obtrusive and are improving all the time.

If you are expecting some nasty winter weather then winter tires are certainly something that you should consider fitting to your vehicle. They will keep you on the road when other tires fail and they will keep you safe when other tires dont.
