What Are You Putting Up With at Work?

Very often, these are people who know that something needs to change, and just don't know where to start or how to go about it.

If this sounds like you, one of the first things I recommend you do is to make a list of all the things you are putting up with at work. Is it your workload? Is it a difficult boss? Is it a general feeling of not being valued or recognised properly for your work? Or is the daily commute that wears you down before you even step into the office? Maybe you just don't have enough time to spend with your family and friends. It's really important to be specific. What is it exactly about your workload or boss that you are unhappy with? What specifically would make you feel more appreciated and valued? Is it a higher salary, or would a few more words of thanks do the trick? How much more would you need to earn to feel like you are being paid what you are worth?

Once you have a detailed list of everything about your job that you dislike, take yourself off to your favourite cafe and spend some time deciding exactly what you actually want. This is the fun part! One of the most important steps you need to take is to decide not what you don't want, but what you do want. This is a simple, but powerful paradigm shift which will empower you to look to the future instead of wasting your time complaining about the past. So challenge yourself today: what would make you truly happy in your job? What are your inherent values, and which of these absolutely need to be in place for you to feel fulfilled? Do you want more of a challenge? More time to pursue your love of photography or sports? More time to travel? Do you want to be your own boss, and have the freedom to decide where and how much you work?

Step three is often the most challenging of all. This is where you can make the biggest leaps forward in your career, as you realise that you truly have the opportunity to define your future. Ask yourself, just how much do I actually want change? How much do I truly want change? How much is it costing me to stay in this situation? How long am I really prepared to put up with these things? If I am in the same situation this time next year, how will I feel? What if, by that time, I could be in my ideal job?

Be honest with yourself. Some people are just not ready for change, and that is fine. It is fantastic to come to the realisation that a few simple tweaks to your working life will make all the difference. But, if you have reached the point that you are simply no longer prepared to put up with an unfulfilling, stressful, or boring job any longer, set yourself a date and decide to take action! This small decision alone will make you sit up straight and feel more in control about your life. Work backwards from your goal. What do you need to do and when. Break each step down into bite-sized, manageable chunks. And then just go for it!
