What Are Your Options When It Comes To Caravan Insurance?
Anyone who spends a vast amount of money purchasing a caravan obviously wants to know that their asset is adequately insured
. However, when it comes to shopping for insurance there are certain things you need to take into consideration, in that the insurance policies for static caravans are not the same as insurance policies for touring caravans.
Okay, so what is considered to be a touring caravan and what is a static caravan? Basically, a static caravan is one which remains on a camping site, while a touring caravan is one which you tow with your car. As you can see, the type of caravan insurance you require will depend on the type of caravan you own.
Rather than split hairs, let's take a look at those benefits which are provided by insurance companies irrespective of what type of caravan you own.
If we were discussing car insurance then this would be called third party, fire and theft. Generally speaking, liability cover offers you protection in the event of your caravan causing damage to someone else's property, or even bodily injury. For example, you could be backing your caravan up at a camp site and you end up reversing it into someone else's car.
A static caravan can also cause damage or injury. For example, many people rent their static caravans out to others when they're not using them. Should one of the tenants get injured because of something being wrong with your caravan, as the owner you would be held responsible, hence the reason why you need to have third party liability cover.
Some caravan insurance policies include what is known as 'new for old', but with that said, they will usually only include this in a policy if your caravan is a certain age. Basically, 'new for old' simply means that should your caravan be stolen or damaged beyond repair, the insurance company will replace it with a new one. If your caravan is new, or even relatively new, then this is something you really do need to check out, given that not all insurance providers include this.
Just as with regular car insurance, the risk of theft is something which insurance companies take very seriously. Providing you can satisfy the insurance company that you've taken adequate measures in order to minimise the chances of your caravan being stolen, you can almost always expect to receive attractive discounts. In other words, if you have a touring caravan then you should consider installing a hitch-lock and perhaps a GPS tracking device and if you have a static caravan then you'll need to have an alarm installed and even some security lighting.
Many insurance providers offer special discounts on insurance if you belong to a caravan club. This may not always be the case so of course it's something you need to determine before making any decisions.
The bottom line is, affordable caravan insurance is available providing you're willing to shop around and of course you should never accept the first offer you come across, but instead, you need to compare quotes from several providers.
