The UK can offer two types of landline service. The first is through copper cabling which is available in nearly 100% of the country and should be accessible to you unless youve moved to a very remote location! Copper services are provided by many of the companies you might traditionally think of when it comes to phone lines, such as the popular BT and TalkTalk services. Cable services also carry phone line signals, but are only available to roughly 50% of the population, and mostly in towns and cities. Only a single provider, Virgin Media, offers a cable service in the UK at this time.

Copper Services Copper phone line services were once the sole domain of BT, but in the early 80s when the company was privatised it began to offer its network out to other providers, which began competition in the phone market for the first time in history, leading to many of the cheap phone line providers that are available today. These providers are able to set their own prices separate from what BT charge, as well as decide their own talk plans and services, so theres plenty of variation when it comes to choosing a copper service. Some of the most popular copper based alternatives to BT include the Post Office, Primus Saver and YourCalls.net, all of whom offer reduced rates from BT for people willing to shop around.

More recently, BT has allowed providers to use their own network entirely, in a process called Local Loop Unbundling (LLU). This service allows a provider to control their own network without interference from BT, while still using copper cable. This normally makes companies that use these services the best of both worlds, especially if you opt to bundle your home phone line with a cheap broadband connection as well. Plusnet, Sky and TalkTalk all offer LLU services. Beware though, if you swap to an LLU service and then choose to move back to a non LLU service at a later date, you could be charged over 100 to reconnect to the BT network!

Cable Services - Cable services are provided in the UK by Virgin Media, who are the only cable provider in the country. About 50% of houses in the UK can receive Virgin Media cable services so before you consider these options its worth checking online to make sure that you can actually receive the Virgin Media service at all. Virgin Media can be a very good choice for people who want to bundle their broadband, television and phone with a single provider as a package deal is nearly always cheaper than getting all three services from separate providers.
