What Can Be Done For A Broken Nose?
Living in this world subjects us to all kinds of mishaps
. Usually they result in a few scratches and scrapes--maybe burns or bruises. We say, "Ouch!" and move on. But what happens when an injury is not something that will simply vanish in a few days or weeks?
Most broken bones can be set in a cast and, with the discomfort and inconvenience lasting no more than a couple months, you can continue with your life after a degree of disgruntlement. However, what about when the injury is more than inconvenient--what if it is prominent? What if it is even disfiguring?
Facial hurts can have just such an effect. So what can you do if you think you've broken your nose? Trust me, it isn't the end of the world. But if you want to restore the original aesthetics to your face, there are some steps you need to take right away and long-term.
During the injurious blow, did you hear a loud noise, like a pop or a snap? This could be indicative that the septum--the bone that anchors your nose to the rest of the skull--has actually fractured and could eventually break away from your face. If you think this may be the case, you should make a beeline for the emergency room.
A broken nose is likely to bleed quite a bit, so carefully staunch the bleeding with a towel or piece of clothing. With most wounds, you want to apply as much pressure as you can to cut off the flow, but with a broken nose, that may make the injury worse, so be very careful.
Bruising around the nose and underneath the eyes is common when you have broken your nose. The bruises will fade over time, but that is a good indication that the blow was serious enough to cause a break.
In the coming days, your nose may run mucus, sometimes mixed with blood, and it will most likely become swollen and tender. Take some acetaminophen for the pain and avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen.
Get yourself into the doctor as soon as possible. A doctor can straighten and splint the nose and prescribe stronger painkillers if necessary. However, for a serious break, sometimes a general practitioner can't prevent cosmetic deformity. They can recommend a Manhattan rhinoplasty surgeon to correct the damage.
Not only can a surgeon fix the appearance of a broken nose, they can also correct breathing problems potentially brought on by the injury, which is, of course, a big relief.
