What Can I Do to Help Others and Feel Better on a Daily Basis?
Naturally, the answer to this question can take many forms
, depending on your personal situation, talents, gifts and situations you run into. However, I'll take a more generic approach, and write about things I have found helpful and easy to undertake for the majority of people. To explain this point a little further, I feel and have found, from personal experience, that helping others can and does bring great joy as well as satisfaction for me.
My point here is for all of us to actively think about this point, and then apply it. I have included some pointers below for your consideration.
You can make a colleague a cup of coffee and leave it on their desk, anonymously if you like.
You might like to be thankful and appreciative of a shop assistant when you're out shopping.
Collecting the garbage bin for your neighbour when you collect your own.
When you're next at the supermarket, you might put away a stray shopping trolley
Tell someone a joke when you're out and about, if they look like they might need brightening up.
Giving your seat to someone standing on the bus or train.
Essentially, you're limited by your imagination, as I have said earlier. However, a very possible question you might ask is "Why bother with all this?" It is a reasonable question, particularly given our very hectic pace of life. From my point of view and experience, I have found that the act of going out of my way to help others has not only helped someone else, obviously, but the feeling of satisfaction is almost more rewarding than the act to the other person. It's like a sense of achievement and accomplishment. Putting it another way, you can walk away really knowing you've done something good for someone, and not just yourself, to forward your own goals. Best of all, it frequently need not cost anything financial, other than a bit of time. I'd say it's a sad day when we can't do something simple for others because of our own needs and desire to get so much done.
In fact, I have found I am almost more efficient and happy after doing something for someone else, so the pay off is doubled, in my increased sense of achievement and I'm able to better breeze through my various tasks for the day. In addition, I am used to packing a lot into my day, and invite you to try helping others. It really does help both sides.
