What Can Rhonda Byrne's "the Secret" Teach Internet Marketers?

According to Rhonda Byrne, anybody can be, get or do anything he wants!

Seriously, it is the same message as the Status Quo classic hard rock hit...

"Whatever you want, Whatever you like, You pay your money, You take your choice, Whatever you need..."

Apparently, the universe is a glorified mail order catalogue. All you have to do is flip through the pages of your imagination, dial up the universal 24/7 hotline, order whatever you want with your cosmic credit card and you are sorted!

So what exactly is the film, The Secret all about? Is there anything more to it than that rather crass image of unlimited and self-indulgent consumption?

The Secret makes a big appeal to people's desire to believe that behind the facade of everyday life, there is a hidden secret, a secret that is represented as having been "hidden" for centuries, but which can most happily and conveniently be revealed in the film itself.

Throughout history many of the most successful people in various fields are said to have had access to the secret.

Once you get beyond the mythologizing, which amounts to little more than very clever packaging and marketing, are there any worthwhile messages contained in the film?

Actually, yes there are, as you would expect from a film that features success mentality coaches such as Jack Canfield, Joe Vitale, Michael Beckwith and Bob Doyle. If you can get beyond the unfortunate image of the universe as a mail order catalogue, you can certainly find a lot of useful content in the film that will inspire you to develop a positive mindset towards the challenges and opportunities that confront you.

Here are some of the key points:

1. Gratitude. Adopt the mindset of gratitude. Express thankfulness for the good things you already have. But also, feel gratitude for the things that you seek, as if you were already in possession of them. If there were just one rule that could be extracted from the secret it would be the rule of gratitude.

2. Ask. When you know what it is that you want, visualise it and ask the universal intelligence for it.

3. Believe. Believe that you have already received the thing that you want, express gratitude and see yourself in possession of the object of desire.

4. Receive. Adopt a receptive mentality and be ready for the inspiration or opening that will bring you the things that you desire.

What is interesting about how The Secret came to be made is that according to Byrne she adopted the methods of the secret in order to bring the film into being. The usual methods of film-making were abandoned in favour of processes such as gratitude, visualization, and faith. The entire film crew went to America after having arranged just one interview. They went with an attitude of belief that the rest would come together. In the end fifty-two success teachers were interviewed.

The Secret was promoted extensively on the Internet using viral marketing campaigns in which the nature of the secret behind The Secret was not revealed. This, and the excellent packaging of the film, created an intense interest and a momentum developed that turned the film into a sales phenomenon and a "success secret" in its own right.

Following the success of the film, a book version of The Secret was published in 2007, followed by The Secret Gratitude Book.

Inevitably, the success of The Secret has sparked some controversy about the accuracy of the message, or the implications of it for those who do not succeed in life. Despite being called "The Secret" (note the use of the word "The" to give the film its unique selling proposition), there is nothing really new or secret at all about the content of the film, as its critics have been quick to note.

However, there is much of value in this film for anybody who is seeking positive advice about how to adopt the right mentality for success. This is especially the case for anybody who is struggling to make a success of a home-based Internet business, since that is the kind of enterprise that requires an immense amount of self motivation, visualisation and self-belief in order to fulfil.

The Secret Tips for Internet Marketers:

1. The message of the secret will provide much inspiration and help with visualisation of goals for anybody seeking success on the Internet.

2. When thinking about their own products and services, Internet marketers should learn the lessons of content repackaging that The Secret provides.

3. Internet marketers can learn a lot by studying how the secret became a sales phenomenon through viral marketing on the Internet.

4. Internet marketers should not be afraid of courting controversy. Quite often it can be an excellent method of publicising your products and services.
