As a medical herbalist, I studied for 5 full years and completed hundreds of hours of clinical practise and mentoring before founding a practise myself. I am regularly asked about the medicines I use and like to pass on the fruits of my herb garden room to patients and friends.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) grows low and forms a ground cover level, along with some creeping Thymes. It's aniseed scent is released when pressed which is why it was a traditional plant for paths and garden seats. However, I like to grow medicinal herbs organically in a separate garden room space where they have protection from the rough end of children's games and any pet damage.

More often than not, it's the flowers I want, although the leaves and stems also contain medicinal elements. In tea form, the dose is static and safe at one teaspoon of the dried herb to each boiling cup of water, infuse for 5-10 minutes and drink a cup freely. Chamomile contains chamazulene, which is active against staphylococcus aureus.

Internally taken as a tea, it is known for its ability to chill out! Calming down excitability, easing insomnia and restlessness, it is also quite safe for use in children. It was traditionally given in cases of measles and in early stages of any general infectious fever. Chamomile has particular affiliation with the gastro-intestinal tract and as such is effective in the treatment of GI spasm, inflammation, peptic ulcers, gum disease and dyspepsia. Carminative and bitter, it is a tonic to the digestive system. Basically, any ailment from lips to bum!

In chamomile garden rooms, the more it is trodden, the more it will spread. The more it is trodden, the more wonderful aromatic scent pervades the garden!
