Automatic mailings are made to the people in the computer user's address book. When the recipients open the email messages, and in some cases just view it in a previewer, the virus is launched. It then replicates itself by sending out another batch of email. Trojan horses and worms are often associated with viruses but they are quite different in that neither replicates themselves. Worms manipulate security loopholes to spread without attaching themselves to any other program. Trojan horses usually seem like benign coding but they have hidden agendas. Under the umbrella of malware is the advertising software that is more annoying than wicked. Adware automatically downloads and displays advertisements on the user's system. Like a virus, they are attached to other programs but they do not have the ability to replicate. Many software companies will bundle adware with their products to help lower the cost of distribution. Adware's evil twin is spyware. Adware and spyware function similarly (attached to other programs but without replication), but their intent is quite different. Spyware's whole purpose is to collect information about the computer's owner and exploit that information. Surfing habits and financial information (credit card numbers and bank accounts) are at the mercy of spyware. Using the information gathered, spyware can be used to redirect web browsers without consent, change the computer settings, change home pages, prevent internet connection, and even render installed programs as non-functional. Some spyware is nothing more than an overly intrusive adware code. The program will collect data on the user and then download advertisements that are matched to that data. While not a virus itself, spyware will exploit a system that is the victim of a virus. Many times spyware infiltrates a system by attaching itself to a worm. Most system slowness can be attributed to spyware. Spyware is known to increase CPU usage which will slow down all running programs, sometimes to the point of freezing and computer crashes. It can inhibit the boot process, reduce disk space, and 'lag' network connections. Rarely does a computer only have one spyware infection. Protection against malware is the backbone of the computer security industry. Anti-virus programs and removers of adware and spyware are the most common forms of system security. Growing in regard are registry cleaners. Registry cleaners are Windows utilities that remove redundant and useless information from the registry. The pluses of using these cleaners are that computer performance can be enhanced. The minuses are that registry cleaners generally cannot distinguish between malignant and benign information. And, some registry cleaners are actually trojan horses that install other forms of malware while cleaning the registry. Computer owners are highly advised to consider all security options before running a registry cleaner.
