What Causes A Smelly Septic Tank?

So you've finally bought your first home or moved out onto a farm or off the grid

and now you're having to deal with a whole slew of questions that you never had to ask before: what do you do when you run out of propane? What's that creepy noise you hear every night? And why is your septic tank so smelly that you can pick up traces of the odour from down the road?

We can't help you with the first two questions, but we can help you with the third. A smelly septic tank always comes down to bacteria. To a certain extent, you can't really stop septic tank bacteria from forming, but you can help to control the smell, you can reduce the levels of dangerous and unpleasant bacteria, and you can ensure that that bacteria is controlled and maintained in a safe manner.

If you're actually able to smell the bacteria then chances are you have an issue with your tank's PH. If the PH levels get unbalanced, then it becomes acidic, and that's when odours are emitted. Otherwise, the tank, barring a leak, should be able to contain the smells just fine.

Here's a quick cure for stinky septic: mix 5kg of hydrated lime with a bucket of water, and simply flush that down the toilet. If you have any residue left in the bucket, fill and flush again. This should get those PH levels back to normal almost immediately. Note that you will not want to do this just before emptying the tank as lime can affect the soils surrounding the tank.

Another simple trick is to just walk to the nearest hardware and houseware store, pick up a few enzyme pellets, and flush these now and then to combat the buildup of bacteria-growing fatty materials in the trenches of the tank.

In the end, a bad smell generally comes down to bacteria, which generally comes down to a tank that's getting a bad diet. Make sure that it gets its share of enzyme pellets and lime and that it is pumped regularly and you should be able to combat the odours quite easily. It's all a matter of taking the time to take care of your home and your septic system in the proper manner.
