What Causes Dyspepsia And How Is It Treated?

Dyspepsia is a condition related to the digestive system that is more commonly known as indigestion

. It can be cause by consuming too much food or alcohol or it could be caused by some other medical condition.

Indigestion can be chronic lasting for years, particularly if it is due to symptoms associated with heartburn. When heartburn is present, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is not closing properly after food passes through it to the stomach.

This allows stomach acids to travel back via the LES causing damage to the esophageal lining.

Dyspepsia symptoms can include pain in the abdominal, belching, bloating, vomiting and nausea.

Causes:

The food we consume often play a big part in indigestion. It can also be caused by swallowing too much air when eating or drinking.

Other causes may include Diabetes mellitus, Bacterial infection, Overactive thyroid and medications such as NSAIDs, antibiotics, and estrogens.

A side effect of some medicines is indigestion. It is also possible to get indigestion if medicine such as Percocet is taken on an empty stomach as it irritates the lining of the stomach.

Appendicitis:

If your appendix becomes infected and is left untreated, it can cause the appendix to rupture causing sepsis and possibly death.

It is easily diagnosed by palpation of the area, and the patient's response is extreme pain. Appendicitis is treated by a procedure called appendectomy, which is the surgical removal of the offending appendix.

Diagnosis:

Dyspepsia is diagnosed by the presentation of symptoms and the ruling out of other possible underlying diseases. A complete medical history is taken by the health care provider and blood tests are ordered.

The doctor may take stool samples to check for infection, parasites or blood. Tests may also include a CT scan, x-rays and small bowel series. Then the necessary treatment can be prescribed.

Treatment:

When indigestion is caused by reflux of stomach acids into the esophagus, the common treatment of choice is with proton pump inhibitors, such as Prilosec and Prevacid These drugs act to reduce the amount of stomach acids produced.

You should always consult with your doctor where dyspepsia is chronic and increasing in severity. It may be a symptom of a much greater medical problem that deserves immediate attention.
