What Causes Heartburn and How Serious is it?
Most people suffer an occasional bout of heartburn and this is nothing to worry about
. However, when these attacks become regular and more frequent then this may indicate a more serious or even a chronic condition. So, what causes heartburn? If you are a heartburn sufferer you are only too familiar with the symptoms of burning pain and nausea that you experience when stomach acids flow back into your esophagus.. But what causes heartburn to occur? There are many things which can produce this backflow of acid, or acid reflux but exactly what causes heartburn varies from one person to another. Most causes, however, fall mainly into the categories of diet and lifestyle. Foods that cause heartburn include fatty foods, spicy foods, tomatoes, garlic, black pepper, raw onions, chocolate, peppermint, citrus fruits and juices, coffee, alcoholic and carbonated beverages. When and how you eat is also important. Eating large meals, rushing your food and eating too close to your bedtime, should be avoided. Being overweight, pregnant, lacking exercise, drinking too much, smoking and suffering from stress are also well known triggers for heartburn attacks. How serious is it? If heartburn or acid reflux persists untreated, repeated acid contact can produce inflammation of the esophagus which can develop into a much more serious condition. The esophagus can become scarred by the repeated attack from stomach acid and the scar tissue can gradually build up to restrict the opening in the esophagus, so that swallowing food and even fluid can become extremely difficult. Even more serious is the possibility that the cells in the lower esophagus can actually change in character through constant attack and become cancerous, obviously an extremely dangerous situation. So, while occasional bouts of heartburn do not pose a big problem, when they occur more regularly or tend to last for long periods, then you should seek medical advice. You will probably be prescribed some form of medication that either neutralises or reduces the amount of stomach acid. The problem with taking these conventional medications is that it is your symptoms that are treated and not what causes heartburn in the first place. There is also the potential problem of adverse and possibly harmful side effects commonly associated with drug based medication. There is a great deal that you can do, that does not rely on conventional medication. Modifying your diet and making changes to your lifestyle, can eliminate what causes heartburn to occur.
