What Concrete Lifting Is All About

A rose by any other name is still a rose, and whether you call it concrete leveling

, mud-jacking, slab-jacking, or concrete raising, as long as it involves raising sunken concrete slabs via hydraulic pressure injection, it is still concrete lifting.

Concrete lifting is one of the ways by which you can repair sinking concrete slabs. The science, however, behind the lifting action has been around for quite some time. But why the need to lift concrete slabs? The main reason why concrete slabs sink or tilt is because the grounds they are set on are not compact in all places.

Oftentimes, the first step to concrete lifting is to have one-inch holes drilled through the sunken concrete slabs. It is through these holes that ground limestone, sand, and Portland cement are pumped underneath the slab. This procedure hydraulically raises the slab. Once the sunken slab has been raised, high-strength cement that dries quickly is then used to cover the holes made. This cement usually blends with the existing concrete.

There are a number of materials that can be used when doing concrete lifting. Some of the most popular ones include grout and polyurethane. Grout is basically a mixture of sand and a small amount of cement. It is more preferred over polyurethane since the latter is not as strong enough to hold the concrete in place.

The advantage of using grout when doing concrete repairs and lifting using grout is that it can be quite inexpensive and is readily available as opposed to polyurethane. Aside from this, since grout contains fine aggregates, it is able to harden to about 2,400 psi in contrast to the 71 psi that polyurethane offers. It also does not have any volume change over the years whereas polyurethane can have a 3% shrinkage after 10 years.
