What Defines An Eco Friendly Hotel?

Everywhere one looks, people are going green. When traveling, more and more people are looking for opportunities to help the planet. Hotels are getting on board with this earth conscious method and want to appeal to a wider variety, of both types of travelers. Many people become wasteful on vacations, not concerned about air condition and such, because they do not have to pay for the bill. However, in an effort to conserve energy, many hotels are utilizing such products as motion detectors to regulate room temperatures. When someone is not in the room, the detector can sense it and will adjust the temperature accordingly. This is a huge savings on energy. Also many are opting for Geo-thermal system. This can provide an 80% energy saving, over the life of the unit, compared to a traditional HVAC unit.

So what makes an Eco friendly hotel different, there are many things, for example the cleaning supplies used. Everyone sees the cleaning personnel, pushing a cart of chemicals. In a green environment, they will choose natural cleaners and things that are not harmful to the environment. The LEED certification is a strict organization that governs green hotels. They have only certified 64 hotels in the United States, as actually being ecofriendly. Here are some things to look for when checking out ecofriendly motels:

*Solar Panels

*Use of recycled materials

*Refillable soaps, rather than plastic bottles

*Wind and solar energy forms

*Use of flameless candles in spas

*Electric lawn mowers

*Growing herbs, fruits, and vegetables

While there are many things that can be done to go green, not every hotel will utilize each one. Some hotels have instituted the 2 towel night policy. They ask guests to use their towels 2 nights instead of just one. This saves the hotel a fortune on laundry expenses. Other hotels, which have restaurants, will recycle the scraps of food, to animals in nearby communities. From the paint that colors the walls, to materials used in curtains, everything can be made from recycled or earth friendly materials.

It is very difficult to obtain a LEED rating, and thus that is why there are only a few in America. When looking for lodging, one needs to be careful and note that just because a hotel claims to be green, does not actually mean that they have achieved green. Some use this as a marketing ploy, to draw more earth conscious customers. While there will always be those who want in on the action, it is great to see so many hotels catching on board with conservation of Mother Earth.
