What Do You Want From Your Life?
Are you dreaming of becoming a doctor one day
? Have you even begun designing your course load in preparation for application to medical school? You may want to take a moment to take a hard look at the field, and at yourself, and decide whether or not this is truly the right move for you.
There is such a large number of students who go into college with an expressed interest in getting an MD There are many serious considerations to make when evaluating the possibility of seeking an MD prior to pursuing the degree. If you are thinking of becoming a doctor There are a series of questions to answer when you go after a degree.
Why do you want to be a doctor? Are you genuinely interested in healing the sick?
Do I have the right actions to succeed in this line of work? Am I able to remain committed to a job, even though a more appealing distraction may capture my interest?
The importance of being good at biology, chemistry, and math can not be stressed enough. Not only do you find these courses easy, but do you find them interesting? could you study them in depth for some time and not find them stale?
do you realize how important these basics are in learning medicine? Could you understand a patients anger without finding it to distressing or personal?
Am I able to maintain my sense of humor even when the people around me are losing theirs? Are you willing to accept the responsibility that comes with making tough choices, without breaking down from the pressure?
How long are you willing to study and work before you begin to realize a financial gain and personal recognition? Health care today is in a mode of change and am I well versed in what I am up against? Do you understand the future changes coming to the field of health care? Medical training has a variety of tracks to consider when you begin your bachelor degree study.
One thing most undergraduate programs will all do is urge you to get a sold liberal arts education. They will also advise you to seriously consider whether a career in medicine or other health sciences is right for you.
Medical school, or any program in the health sciences field will not be an easy one. The number of medical schools in the country currently stands at 114. There are many qualified applicants who are rejected when the aggressive evaluations are made to get the very best students in each school.
To say there is stiff competition is a massive understatement. A student must not have been a 4.0 student, but neither will an all B student gain entry into the program. And there's no point in denying that a strong background in organic chemistry is a major qualification that admissions officers will look for.
You really should have a backup plan in place just in case you decide the medical career isn't for you. Don't get tunnel-vised about medicine alone, which could cause you to overlook signals indicating you should slow down or save some personal resources which you will need to enjoy a well-balanced and exciting life away from your career. If it starts to seem like you're losing your sense of humor, your career will suffer, too.
Avoid taking detours that denote using a bit of duplicity or choosing a class that you are not really interested in just to get a better grade. This is only going to make it harder for you to concentrate.
The direct approach is always best, but it isn't easy. If at some point you realize you can't handle it, or more importantly, that you don't want to handle it, then allow yourself an out. You can quit.
Never allow yourself to be caught in the waves just to lose sight of the shore. Reexamine your motivations regularly. If you are not happy overall you might want to alter your plans.
Keep moving forward towards your dream. Also keep in mind that what handbooks tell you about personal and financial costs may not quite link up with reality.
It is important that you make a determination early that you will not pursue multiple decisions in your quest. Many students assume that they will be able to enter another field, such as dentistry, if they are not admitted to a medical school.
Not anymore. Dental schools are now only accepting students who have been solidly committed to that goal for some time. The competition for admission to dental school is at least as high as med school.
If you find yourself hating the experience then chances are you will not be a good doctor anyway. A scholar does not have happiness so long as they chase unrealistic dreams.
So if you're beginning to realize that you are no longer finding joy in your intellectual pursuits, then you need to re-evaluate your chosen path and look for ways to broaden your personal horizons, and find a more appropriate career that will lead to a bright future.
