A chicken pen is an area or space which is closed off for keeping chickens

There is a variety of materials that can be used to build chicken pens depending on the quantity of chickens you are keeping. Different materials may be needed. The most popular material used in making chicken pens is fence wire or chicken gauze wire. Other people also use bricks, poles and wooden planks.

Space is essential for chickens to mature well and healthily. They need room to move around. The area in the chicken pen should not be too restrictive. Egg laying chickens especially need room to move around and lay their eggs when they desire. Fresh air and a lot of direct sunlight are also essential to the growth of these chickens. Ensuring chickens have enough room also prevent high mortality as instances of stamping and squashing are reduced.

Environmental factors are necessary to consider when building or buying a chicken pen such as temperature and humidity. It is important to understand and gather knowledge on the type of weather conditions in your area to know what type of chicken pen best suits the environment. It is very important to overcome environmental factors and using the right materials to suit you location. Fitting in heaters or fans in the pens may be an example of trying to overcome the weather element.

The pens also protect the chickens by keeping them safe and protected. There is a lot of danger as they are vulnerable to predators. A stray chicken may become an easy meal to animals that may be around such as dogs and cats. Such an enclosure will keep animals at away.

Common features found in most chicken pens are water holes or containers, feeding stations and egg laying nests or laying stations. Chickens feed throughout the day making it important to have a feeding structure that is monitored, cleaned and refilled throughout the day. The chicken should be built such that cleaning is not hard, and movement to the water containers and food stations is not too restrictive for easier cleaning an elevated floor is better as which droppings pass through the mesh to the ground.

The best thing for you chickens health is to keep them in a clean safe environment for the chickens to grow healthy. That is the only way you can ensure that they will also give you a good harvest in return.
