What Does A Gas Apprenticeship Involve?
If you are looking for a highly skilled job that is rewarding and helps keep people warm and happy
, consider an apprenticeship in gas. The gas industry offers several opportunities for those who want to get ahead. It has a big role in our lives - without it, showers and radiators would be cold and we would feel quite miserable! Since most houses and buildings rely on gas for their appliances - radiators, cookers, boilers and central heating - there is always a huge demand for jobs in this industry.
Two main areas are covered in a gas apprenticeship: gas network engineering and gas service engineering. The first type deals with the repair and laying of gas pipelines underground, which is the ideal job for people who enjoy physical, outdoor work. This would involve digging underground to get to the pipes, perform their work safely, and then piece everything together as new. A gas servicing engineer on the other hand is more about installing, servicing and repairing gas appliances in homes and businesses, as well as answering emergency calls if someone reported a gas smell.
Upon completion of an apprenticeship in gas you will be given a CORGI (Council of Registered Gas Installers) registration - an industry requirement for gas service technicians. Additionally, you will obtain a Level 2 nationally recognised qualification in the area you chose, a technical certificate and key skills. After completing the apprenticeship you could then progress into a more supervisory role.
In order to succeed and progress in the gas industry you will need to have both technical and practical skills and have a keen interest in the sector. You must also understand that gas is highly flammable and can cause serious accidents if handled incorrectly so you must have a serious attitude and stick to the strictest of health and safety guidelines when learning and working. No two days of work will be the same - you'll be out and about making visits to different sites and fixing all sorts of problems. Communication skills are important too, as you'll be talking to customers who'll want to feel confident that everything is being done safely.
