What Does Address Validation Or Verification Mean?
When courier companies are advertising all of the various features that they can
offer to their customers, a lot of those features come out of the courier dispatch software that they are using. This might include things like GPS tracking of your packages, the ability to place orders online, or features that the company uses internally to maximize their performance, such as electronic driver dispatch. However, some of these features might be confusing to you, so it can be useful to know exactly what they are meant to do so you can get a better understanding of how they might or might not benefit your business.
One of the things that you might see advertised as a feature of your courier company or one that you are considering hiring to make a delivery for you, is known as address validation, or address verification. First, realize that if you see these two terms advertised from different courier companies that they mean basically the same thing, and are just different terms used by different software developers to describe a feature which does essentially the same thing.
Next, realize that the number one thing which causes packages to be delivered to the wrong address in the courier industry isn't actually courier error, but is instead mistakes in labeling the address in some way on behalf of the client. This might happen by entering the wrong keystroke when printing off a shipping form, when bad penmanship during the hand labeling of packages causes an error, or by mishearing the original address from a client. However, the use of address verification can check and help reduce these errors before the packages in question are ever put in the field.
What address verification does is it will electronically take your address that you are trying to ship too and make sure that it is in fact a valid US address. Whenever a mistake is made in labeling a package, it almost always will show up as a conflict between the street address and the zip code, as many errors would show a conflict in that within the zip code database. If you use the online system of your courier company which has this feature enabled, it only takes a second for it to quickly check and make sure that you're trying to ship to a correct address. That second it takes to check it can send you lost days if your package went to the wrong address.
