What Does Ltl Shipping Services Mean?

Once a company grows to a point where its shipments are too large to be transported

by a regular parcel courier, they are going to have a whole new world of shipping options open up to them. This can make knowing what the most cost and time effective methods of shipping are much more difficult, but with a little research, a company that is used to using a Chicago messenger service will soon be ready to use a massive cross country trucking service to move their goods.

When moving up to a larger types of courier company, one thing which it is imperative to learn about is LTL shipping. This is so important because it is one of the most common ways that large shipments are transported. It is so commonly used because such a wide range of shipments sizes are perfect for shipping under the LTL model. For instance, a parcel carrier will typically carry anything which weighs less than 100 lbs. A full truck might be hired for moving shipments that weigh more than 10,000 lbs. Any shipments falling in between are going to be a good size for using an LTL courier.

LTL stands for less than truck load. It is the second of the two primary methods that trucking companies organize their shipments. The other way that they do this is known as FTL, or full truck load. This is when one company hires a moving company to move a large shipment, and they hire the entire truck to do so. In LTL, they hire "less than" the full truck, which means that a courier company will have several clients with goods on the same vehicle.

This is actually more like the parcel carrier model than FTL shipping. Parcel carriers often have packages from many different clients in their vans which they deliver in the most efficient manner possible. An LTL shipment works in a very similar manner.

This helps to bring down the overall cost of shipping for each client considerably. Because they share most of the expenses, each client's bill will be less than if they were to have shipped using a standalone vehicle. The only drawback to this model is that deliveries are sometimes not made quite as quickly. This is due to the fact that each client's delivery needs are made at that most practical time, which can delay those in the last position.
