What Does Psyllium Do For Us?

Psyllium is the name used for several members of the plant genus Plantago (which contains over 200 species)

. The seeds are often used commercially in the production of mucilage.Psyllium is commercially produced in many different European countries, including Pakistan, India, and the former Soviet Union. India ranks first in the world for the production and export of psyllium.

Psyllium can be taken in tablet form - it is often the active ingredient in many laxatives and constipation remedies. However, the most inexpensive and effective methods of colon cleansing include the ingestion of psyllium in its most natural form - psyllium husks, psyllium seeds and psyllium fiber powder.

In your colon, psyllium activates peristaltic action and helps to clean your colon of any stagnation that has occurred there. By adding moisture to dry hard fecal matter, psyllium helps to move fecal matter through your colon. As psyllium seeds bulk up in your colon, they push against your colon walls stimulating peristaltic action. The soluble fiber in psyllium provides food for good bacteria, which helps them to multiple. Fiber supplements such as psyllium have been proven to be effective for easing constipation, but most nutritionists agree that the best source of fiber is from foods. One recent published study assessed the validity of psyllium as a remedy for constipation versus docusate sodium, a synthetic, anionic laxative that is also marketed as a cure for constipation, and psyllium was shown to be a faster and a more consistent remedy for constipation by increasing water content.

Psyllium is bulk-forming and rich in soluble fiber and mucilage. Soluble fiber absorbs water, becomes bulky in the stomach and works throughout the intestinal tract. Mucilage is a sticky, gooey substance secreted by certain plants. Psyllium seeds contain 10-30% mucilage. Once in the digestive tract, mucilage absorbs water and swells. Laxatives can be habit-forming if you use them for a prolonged period of time or frequently. This may damage the muscle tissues or intestinal nerves. Prefer taking Psyllium as recommended by your physician. Avoid taking it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients present in Psyllium or if you have difficulty swallowing.

Psyllium husk are safely recommended to improve bowel movement. The husk absorbs around 16 times of its weight in terms of digestive mucus and harmful toxins as it passes by the intestines. The substance leaves a protective coating in the colon which makes bowel movement easier as compared before colon cleansing therapy.

Psyllium also acts as a prebiotic - nutritionally supporting the body in healing the inner lining of the inflamed intestines. It is also used as a regular dietary supplement to help support regulate bowel movement.Dissolved in the fluids present in our digestive system, psyllium mucilage expands. Psyllium has been used by doctors and hospitals for constipation and diarrhea for decades. For constipation, psyllium fiber increases stool weight and number of BM's a day. For adults with diarrhea, psyllium has been used to counter the oily discharge effects of many weight loss medicines.

When consumed with liquid, psyllium husk can swell up to 16 times its normal size and weight. Psyllium makes stools firmer and slower to pass through the digestive tract which helps cleanse the colon by helping to move out excess fecal matter and wastes trapped inside the colon. The benefits of taking psyllium fiber to promote weight loss, would come through its ability to enable digestion without much absorption, much like a cleanse agent, and its ability to swell up with water. Besides making you feel fuller, a healthy digestive system eliminates excess fat and toxins. Psyllium Husk is a fiber extracted from the seed of a Psyllium plant. Basically, it is taken as a food supplements in a form of capsules. It gives a lot of health benefits. As it contains carbohydrate, it effectively relieves constipation. Moreover, it is excellent in controlling weight and improves functions within our gastrointestinal tract. It is very effective for bowel problems.
