What Does Shamanism Mean In Today's World?
In today's Western Culture many are now moving away from the old culture which was all about money, sex and power to a higher level of consciousness where we are seeking more in our lives. This often happens when we hit a mid life crisis or during a period of profound change.
Leading to Google searches such as "What is next in my life?", "What do I want?", "Why am I here?".
I went through this a few years ago, and started the search for something else. My voyage went from becoming a Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner, to discovering shamanism as a Shamanic Practitioner.
Shamanism is now experiencing a resurgence in today's world - it is still the way of life for many indigenous people - and increasingly we are looking for answers that are not provided by a more conventional route.
Having studied with the Native American Indians and Hawaiian Kahunas (all Shamans) and latterly with Druids, I have integrated these practices into my everyday life. Popularly known as 'Core Shamanism', a term coined by Michael Harner, we take the practices and adapt them for our culture and the way we live.
This could involve practices such as 'Ancestral lineage' - the belief that any past conflict or hurt that has been passed down through the generations can be corrected - so it is no longer passed on to the next generation.
Meditation enables us to discover our Power Animal(s), Spiritual Guides and Guardian Animal (Totem Beast). The understanding of an animal that has always attracted you can provide insights.
Setting your 'intention' everyday is a classic shamanic practice and today we are familiar with goal setting so why not set out your intention or goal for each day. This provides focus.
We are now focusing much more on environmental concerns and 'green' issues- again, a shamanic practice, focusing on the four elements; fire, air, water and earth, as well as connecting increasingly with nature. Shamans believe that everything has a spirit, and therefore having respect is important.
We see more and more about the mind/body connection as a route to self healing and our toxic thought can have a detrimental effect on our body. What goes on inside has a direct effect on the outside.
Shamans focus on the present moment - here and now - as our actions now will not only affect our own future, but also those of our children and our planet.
