What Does Web 2.0 Mean?
Until about 10 years ago, the Internet was an individual effort
. Someone would create a website - generate their own content and own images, write the HTML code, etc. - and then use traditional means (business cards, direct mailers, even e-mail) to tell people about the site. Once people visited the site (if they visited) the visitor was able to consume the information or perhaps use any simple functions the site provided, but that was the end of it.
But since then, the Internet has not only become a much more collaborative effort, but also allowed everyday users to generate websites - giving birth to Web 2.0.
The term "Web 2.0" is actually a misnomer. The numerical system using terms like "2.0" or "version 4.3" usually refers to technological upgrades in the software or the system; there has been no such "upgrade" to the World Wide Web other than the upgrade in ideas, philosophy, attitude, and application.
There are several key aspects to Web 2.0:
*Blogging Anyone can start a blog; it's simple and it's free. Doing so puts you right in the middle of Web 2.0 because it allows you to generate your own content, network, review comments, collaborate, and much more.
*Content Delivery You no longer have to visit CNN to read the articles on CNN. Through RSS feeds, content is sent out without formatting - meaning it can be adapted to any system (widgets, plugins, etc.) desired.
*Bookmarking, Linking, Networking All of the social networking sites - Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Flickr, StumbleUpon, etc. - are Web 2.0 systems. This allows anyone to quickly and easily share content, often without ever visiting the actual site delivering the content. (e.g. You can watch a YouTube video on Facebook.)
*Collaboration Wikipedia is perhaps the best example; anyone can edit or change any content on the site (although, more recently, the site has developed a more specific approval process). This allows people to bring their own insight and expertise to any topic.
*Categorizing Keywords, search terms, tagging, etc. allow images, posts, and other content to be placed into categories so others won't have to view the content before knowing what it's about.
*Mix and Match Through a little technical knowhow, users can take two previously unrelated websites and bring them together. Someone can take Google Maps and use it to show where the closest Wi-Fi hotspot is.
As the Internet continues to grow and develop, it will likely allow even greater flexibility, customization, and collaboration.
