What Does Your Child Need: Tutoring Vs. Brain Training

Back-to-school time means different things to different people

. For some students, it is a fun and exciting time because it is a chance to see friends that you have missed over the summer. For others, it is a dreadful time because all they can think about is the homework. Most nights are spent doing hours of homework causing them to make excuses and ask unanswerable questions such as, Why do I need to do this? or, I dont understand it.

Many of these students who struggle in school end up in a tutoring program to help them catch up. But the question should be, What is tutoring? Tutoring is generally conducted in a small group setting for individuals who are behind in certain academic subjects. The goal is to have someone who is proficient in those subjects help the student catch up to grade level. But what happens when that student doesnt catch up? What happens when that student repeatedly struggles and falls behind year after year? He or she is displaying a struggle that most likely results from one or more weak underlying cognitive skills. Those skills give us the ability to succeed in all areas of life such as sports, academics, memory, and attention.

Cognitive skills training is essentially a workout for the brain. It trains certain areas of the brain, those that are deficient, to be stronger. Therefore, a students ability to learn is faster, easier, and more efficient and makes learning fun. Brain training is designed to impact essential learning skills such as processing speed, phonemic awareness, visual processing, memory skills, attention skills, and logic and reasoning capacity. These skills are not academic subjects that are taught. They are underlying skills that require training.
